“Just what the heck is Kombucha anyway? The technical answer is that Kombucha is a sweetened tea beverage that has been fermented by a yeast and bacteria colony. The less than technical answer is that it's an 'immortal health elixir', a magical vinegary cure all that can heal any and all disease."
The Origin of Kombucha
Various sources indicate that Kombucha is a beverage that originated in Asia, most likely China anywhere from 2 to 5000 years ago. The reason I say 'most likely China' is that it's a beverage made from tea, which until just over a thousand years ago was something only found in China.
The word Kombucha doesn't seem to enter the vernacular until much later. The Russian fascination with Kombucha goes back over 100 years at least, and they soemtimes refer to it as Tea kvass. Owing to the confusion over the name, attempts to locate the exact origins of Kombucha have proved difficult.
At the very least owing to its probiotic properties, Kombucha will definitely help alleviate constipation and other nasty rummy troubles. The Chinese claim to have conducted trials alongside the Japanese and in Soviet Era Russia some supposedly significant research was conducted into the effectiveness of Kombucha.
The Soviet research was conducted owing to Stalin's fear of cancer; Soviet scientists were commisisioned to find a cure. They noted that the Solikamsk and Beresniki regions had virtually no instances of cancer. Upon further investigation they discovered nearly every household was chugging homemade Kombucha.
